Frankmusik- Live & Lost with Blackberry: Day Five Video

Frankmusik- Live & Lost with Blackberry is one of the most interesting musical/media experiences in a while... but I'll review it's significance once it's done. Right now we have to take care of Frankmusik, who is lost somewhere in the cold ass UK, and has tonsillitis!

Check out all the previous posts for more info... basically, our musical hero, is stuck in the middle of nowhere, with almost no cash, and is required to find his way from gig to gig. THE KEY IS ONLY YOU CAN HELP HIM! Check out the L&L itinerary here to help!

Scion Electro House Competition: Win a copy of Pro Tools!

Remix competitions are EVERYWHERE. I still have a grip of WAV files I can't find the time to mess with... Klaxons, Horrors, Editors, Radiohead, Hard Fi, Steve Angelo, Franz Ferdinand, and then a bunch more that are probably not for competitions, that I haven't been able to follow up on lol!

They're a dime a dozen. So what's the problem? I mean WAV files are wicked right? You're getting the same advantage with those that professional remixers/artists do! So that's awesome right?

Well, it's awesome if you have loads, and loads, of time. Case and point: I started remixing the new Frankmusik single "Better Off As Two" two weekends ago and I can't get anywhere with it. Why? Well there initially was one vocal (the left channel) which I had to split into about 10 parts in order to lay down a foundation (funny the difference between 120 and 120.5 BPM; what a headache)... then a week later I was able to secure the right channel (which really hadn't been available) and had to go back and do the same. THAT MEANS I SPENT TWO SATURDAYS splitting the vocal up to match the tempo in Reason and JUST laying down the basics. F-R-U-S-T-R-A-T-I-N-G.

Now, ultimately, that's cool because one day you guys will hear a wicked remixes of his last two singles from me... but in a time sensitive competition? It can be a little more than difficult finding time and using your own software/hardware. Unless I go pro, I'll never win one of these things because I don't have the time. I work 55 hours a week and am married... how am I gonna get a remix done perfectly in two weeks? Using my own set up is too complicated to do anything quickly.

The other alternative is "web based" mixers. Most web-based mixers for remix competitions are garbage. Another good example: Without getting too specific; a "new rave" band had a special remix competition and the program would BARELY stay open on a Mac and only contained about 6 channels (bass, vox, backup vox, guitar, guitar 2, effects)... it was said the winners would be on their single. Um, if the people who remixed the single (for a name think She-Ra/Atari game+Canada=Black Hoodies) were actually winners? They exported those sounds to a keyboard and recorded it through hardware not a little software mixing console. That thing had NO flexibility.

So the joy of the modern accessible electronic music era! WAV files for all! Little chance of winning! Crap software! What's the solution?

Well, I think I saw the future while watching a little demo for Scion's Electro House Blender. It's a web-based, flash mixer... and I know I was just complaining about this, but hold on... it's got 800 sounds! Not 6 sounds... 800! Now, I know that sometimes you want all the parts to yourself to run through you fave soft-synths but, to level the playing field for the rest of us this type of web sequencer type app is perfect for a competition. In this specific case, it wouldn't make sense to give you a zip file of 800 sounds, but in the future this type of program (and maybe offering sounds files) may be a good 1/2 way point between the pros and people who don't have multiple weeks to remix something.

Scion has REALLY put themselves at the forefront of electronic music. Traditionally I have opposed "corporate sponsorship" in music but I realized (as I'm pretty far away from my angst ridden teen years) that companies are going to be the new distributors and that's actually a good thing. Being signed to a label (especially the smaller ones, which electronic labels tend to be) is more like being in a gang now, where the name of the gang gives you access to worlds you wouldn't see otherwise... but going forward it's going to be companies and corporations putting our fav music out because we, the people, have shown them 9/10 we're just gonna take it anyway. The labels are just going to be there to represent quality. And more than ever the consumer is going to be responsible for what's being released and what is successful!

Scion A/V has really trail blazed here and is one of the front runners in changing the music industry. Their compilations have been quality, the design is amazing, and they are repeatedly making music history.

I think it's really rad that they've offered up a website to mix this song on, then they've got a widget to track the most popular mixes, and last but not least... users can create their own mixes for a chance to win the new ProTools software! So if you win you can learn to be a full on remix virtuoso with ProTools (which is, for those of you who don't know, the industry standard of professional producers). Man, I don't even have a copy of ProTools... whoever wins this is gonna be a lucky mug lol!

SO GET TO MIXING! Go forth and win and upon the receiving the good news exclaim "'In Search Of Arcadia' helped me get here!" hahaha... But seriously, good luck to all of you, and get on it because the future can't wait.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST... for those of you who didn't catch it the first time Discobelle just released a mixtape with Scion that is BLAZING. Check out more here. And if you're in Miami this week check out more tomorrow and the next day!

Don Diablo feat Example: "Instant Replay"

I'm sure some of you are going to Winter Music Conference. Must be nice. Must be nice.

Well if you're going to the IDMAs you'll get to catch these boys, Brithopper Example and the "busiest man in electronic music" playing live. I'm gutted I can't be at the IDMAs... which I actually WALKED OUT ON last time I was there lol. I was hungry! What can I say! We went to have drinks with Crystal Castles and still didn't end up eating until 2am or something but that's what Miami is all about lol... RIGHT BUT ANYWAY, if you're luck enough to be there you'll get to see this wicked tune no doubt...

Don Diablo (www.myspace.com/dondiablo), who was most recently dubbed as "the busiest man in electronic music" seems to be living up to that title. This time around he teams up with UK rapper Example (www.myspace.com/leadingbyexample) for the party stormer "Instant Replay". This is the first sneak peak of what the two have been cooking up together in the studio. Expect some more hot releases in the next few months. Aside from collaborating together, Don Diablo is also producing part of Example's forthcoming album together with Chase & Status, Calvin Harris, MJ Cole and others and he remixed his forthcoming single "Girl Can't Dance", which is getting support from all of the big players at this moment. Want to see the two boys LIVE? If you're in Miami for the WMC, catch them Thursday March 26 either at the IDMA's or at Areo Bar Miami for a promotional show (www.mosamerica.com/WMC09).

Well then, I must be off... work to do... normal life to lead... BE BACK SOON!

I NEED YOU TO HELP FRANKMUSIK: "Live & Lost" begins today!

Somewhere between Iverness and Glasgow our dear friend Frankmusik (born Vincent Frank) is probably not doing so hot.

Why you ask?

Today his 5 gigs in 10 days experiment with Blackberry called "Live & Lost" started. They dumped him in a field with like 20 quid and told him to find his way to Glasgow. Now granted, there's a dude with a camera following him, but I mean outside of conversation he's fucked. No food, little money, and in the middle of nowhere.

TO MAKE IT EVEN MORE MESSED UP... Vince has got tonsillitis according to his doctor so... he's supposed to be walking around in the cold, with a cold that affects his voice, and the only people who can help him out are you guys. Yeah, you guys. GO FUCKING FIND FRANKMUSIK AND TAKE CARE OF HIM! Dude is in bad shape. See it here...
Friday Part One

Here is a little trailer that they did for this show... to give you a better idea what it's all about...

I probably sounds like a nice phony stunt? But I assure you that lots of things other than his health are at stake at the moment. With out the help of you British people the man will be in dire straits. I'm totally relying on you guys because I can't do anything other than spread the word... I'm a whole ocean away.

So get at it! Check out Frankmusik.com to find out where he's at. Apparently he's using Myspace/Twitter/Website and his lappie to pull this off. Go and tell him Patch from ISoA sent you :)

I dunno what to post because, well, Vince is in the middle of nowhere so I can't ask him. Bro, if I get this wrong sorry! I'm gonna hit em hard with tracks to draw attention to all this... yell at me later if need be lol. Also big thanks to Kal from Frankisum for help selecting a good selection of tracks.

Ok children, feast on songs. And once full, go save Vincent Frank!

Not British, but too hot to not post: Peter Bjorn & John Remix with Adam Tensta, UNI, and The 87 Stick Up Kids

We all know this is a pretty much strictly British blog... but some shit is too hot to not post. I'd say this is the 5th time this has been done? Posting something with no Brit connection? But you just gotta hear it... here's the press...

Q1 saw the video release of Swedish hip-popsters Peter, Bjorn and John's perfectly timed, recession-proof anthem "Nothing to Worry About". Now as we enter fiscal Q2 LA's beat broker Troublemaker closes a massive international deal releasing his world wide rap remix of Q1's grand success. This new boom-bap version features Sweden's Chief of Raps, Adam Tensta (http://www.myspace.com/adamtensta) along with LA's new rap Board of Directors, UNI (http://myspace.com/unimuzik) and The 87 Stick Up Kids (http://myspace.com/the87stickupkids).

If this track only rocks from LA to Stockholm, at least half of the world will be getting bonuses come Q4.

Metronomy - "Radio Ladio (Mae Shi Remix)"

I remember talking to Metronomy, like at least a year ago, and suggesting we do an interview. I think the problem was initially getting through the PR people, and then finally an interview was agreed to...

...and I never wrote it. See, sometimes balancing being a marketing worker bee/husband doesn't balance so well with being a blogger. I don't make shit doing this so... sometimes those interviews get put in the background so that your life doesn't fall apart lol...

In lieu of somethign 'meatier' (i.e. an interview) I've got another nice Metronomy remix for you guys!

Here's some press...
There’s been a few Radio Ladio remixes knocking around, the Micachu remix for example being one of the best ones. Here’s a Mae Shi remix which I hope you’ll enjoy! Feel free to download, post and share away to your hearts content! Links to more info and the Metronomy sites are below too!

It's my birthday so I've got some shit to attend to! Like nothing... but it sounded good eh?

Parlophone re-issues 1st three Radiohead albums

We almost ALL love Radiohead... but do we love their repackaged albums?

I won't front. I now own every Radiohead album on vinyl because the (American distributor) Captiol vinyl re-issues. But do we feel weird about buying these albums? Or does it matter because they were major label albums to start with... hmmmmm... I mean it's not exactly Paint A Vulgar Picture... or maybe it is?!?!? Dunno.

"Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package! Re-evaluate the songs, Double-pack with a photograph..."

EXCLUSIVE: Mini Viva "I Left My Heart In Tokyo" Acid Girls Remix!

Now first off... let me say that I don't even look at other women ever... my wife is SO crazy hot! I really mean that. This kid I knew from grade school was commending me on being able to get the crown jewel (see she doesn't know she's that smokin') and I was like "I know! How the hell did that happen?!?"...

Now, having said that Mini Viva are some serious lookers. I mean, I'm not looking, but I know other people are going to... and not just because they're like models that sing... but also because they've got some high profile remixes from the like of Treasure Fingers, the ever amazing Fred Falke and now my boys Acid Girls! I'm stoked because I don't often get the chance to post about artists I know, and like, from the U.S. but every once and a while the stars align and I get a Brit group and a remix from my American peeps!

I don't know much about them but... apparently they have good remixes? And apparently they've got vids on Myspace :)
Mini Viva @ Water Rats

Mini Viva- "I Left My Heart In Tokyo (Acid Girls Remix)"

Hopefully this one won't be subject to a DMCA take down AS IT'S PRE-APPROVED MATERIAL LIKE THE LAST TAKE DOWN I GOT! Seriously, I got my 5th one yesterday for a post on my boy Toddla T that was completely legit!

I also hope it will show up on Hype Machine... they have at least temporarily reverted to their "normal" layout after trying to only put the top 100 blogs on the front page. My song/mixes haven't been showing up (like the awesome Robot Koch mix) but I cross my fingers and hope this post shows up because I'm excited!

To take a close, *cough*, look at Mini Viva go to their Myspace! Be back soon!

FABRICLIVE 44: COMMIX Interview (Plus CD Giveaway)!

The first time I heard drum and bass I thought it was, well not god awful, but repetitive and sort of grating. After repeated listens, determined to figure out what the fuss was about, I started to see the weaving patterns and subtle changes that make a drum and bass record intriguing.

When I turned 17 I leaned more toward the London Electrikity, Hospital Records, type stuff and finally was able to appreciate stuff like LTJ Bukem.

And then about 2 years later I could have cared less. I felt like drum and bass was music for jocks who wanted to be DJs or something. A lot of artists I really liked released shit albums in that time period... and I just stopped listening.

After meeting Goldie at WMC a couple years back I pulled out all my d'n'b records (downloaded some Rufige Crew etc) but I still wasn't pulled back into it. It wasn't until I heard the Noisia Fabric mix that I started to really give a shit again.

Commix are a different breed of artists all together. They're the type of duo that'll get you pulling out your old records AND buying new ones. Don't believe me? Pick up Fabriclive 44 (out today in the U.S.)... at least a few of you can skip that step because Fabric and I are teaming up to give 3 copies of the Commix Fabriclive mix away! All you have to do is send your info to put your name and email in the comments and winners will be drawn at random by the end of the week! Just use the soandso [at] whatever [dot] com format to avoid spammers!

Here's a little taste of why Commix are so awesome:

I've been up to my eyeballs in real world work, and illness, or you would have gotten this sooner... but life happens. This is the first part of the interview, expect the 2nd part tomorrow! AND MAKE SURE TO ENTER YOU ADDRESS IN THE COMMENTS, because if you don't enter you can't win!

ISoA: Is it hard to decide on a track list?

Commix: Yeah I think initially we chose about 100 tracks to go through. We had some tracks that we were definitely going to use so we knew, for instance, that "Photograph" at the end of the mix, we always knew we were going to use that at the end. And there were certain old school tracks like the Johnny L track, and the Photek track, that we knew were were going to use. But other than that there was a lot of new material to go through. So it was quite a challenge to get the right mix of tracks on there.

ISoA: Did you do multiple revisions? Or did you just come up with a track listing and say "this is it"?

Commix: No, we kind of grouped together a bunch of different styles of tracks, you know this kind of more minimally, more techy sounding stuff. We sort to tried out some of the, more Calibre, soulful things and grouped it together and then it was a bit of a game like line graphs really whether we started off quite heavy and went down in the middle and back up again...and we tried lots of different ways of doing it. And in the end we settled for the one you listened to. We really wanted it to be really dynamic with a lot of space in it, a lot of ups and downs, and we just about managed it.

ISoA: Drum and bass has been seen as a genre that is stuck? What do you think brought on this perception?

Commix: I think there were lots of things... with everything you get different sorts of subgenres. To a certain extent there are parts of drum and bass, at the moment, that are a bit stuck with people not really experimenting enough. I like to think with what we do, and people like D-Bridge, Instra:mental, Alix Perez, Markus Intalex, we're still trying to explore the groove a lot more. A lot of people say "Well I'm really enlightened and it's still going on" they've got the opinion that it's really stuck and not going anywhere. But as far as we're concerned it's still very experimental music, still got a lot to offer...

ISoA: Where do you think the genre is going in the future?

Commix: We consider it our jobs to try and get it out to... well, there are a lot of people my age who have been scared off by the more garish, sort of jump ups, the wobble bass stuff. I think the future's concerned, there's so much more to be done with drum and bass. We're going to carry on persevering and trying our very best to further it, experimenting, finding new, and one of the things we loved when we got into it is it can be "punky", it can be hip hop influenced, it can be techno influenced, you can pull from so many different things...

And that is it for tonight kiddies because I LITERALLY have to recharge the batteries on my recorder lol. Gonna have A-Trak on the line tomorrow so that's pretty important to take care of! Oh yeah, REMEMBER TO ENTER lol...

EXCLUSIVE: New Robot Koch (of Jahcoozi) "Robots Don't Sleep" Mixtape!

Things have been less than awesome recently. I've got a abscess, that may or may not be cancerous, in my mouth... Hype Machine's front page has switched to only the top 100 blogs (based on Technorati+Delicious+Hype data) on their front page... I cut my meds in half out of financial necessity... and the weather is shit to boot.

But see it's when things are fuck awful like that when someone rides in a blazing white mechanized stallion from the future to save your day... and that person today is Robert "Robot" Koch of Jahcoozi! He's been a long time friend of the blog, in fact he's Arcadian Family (see links on the sidebar), and anytime he makes an appearance it makes the whole week better... no seriously, the numbers on the tracker go through the ceiling lol!

He's got a couple of records coming out in April that you might want to keep a lookout for:

JAHCOOZI - watching you on suagarcane rec (incl. rmx by oliver $ and two fingers)
ROBOT KOCH VS CEREBRAL VORTEX - upside down on jakarta rec (inl. bugatti force rmx)

Today, however, what we have to offer is a blogger's wet dream. This mixtape is full to the brim with exclusives and unreleased tracks. As opposed to the Justice vs Lykke Li (Random-Nobody-Reedit) type mixtapes that we see all over, this tape is one that won't leave your iPod anytime soon! But given how well you've all responded to his other posts I'm sure you already know this :) This is a perfect follow up to Mackaveli's more 2-step oriented mix that I posted at the end of last week; a nice low hard hitting dubstep filled mixtape with melodies popping out all over the place...

TROUBLE & BASS take over Fabric... FREE EXCLUSIVE MIX!

Trouble & Bass were like this weird label that sort of came out of nowhere and took the world by storm. I remember seeing the first EP in an eMusic list of albums someone had tagged as "dubstep". Of course, in search of new things, I downloaded it... and much to my surprise it was much more brilliant than some of the things that were coming outta London!

Now they're going off to London, and Fabric, to run that bitch this week... and if you're in town, and you don't go? You're crazy!

In preparation of Trouble & Bass’ NYC Bass takeover of room three this Friday 6th March, crew members Star Eyes & The Captain have put together this promo mix for the night.

Star Eyes & The Captain- Trouble and Bass Fabric Promo Mix

What's the mix like? Well, as is typical, it's nothing typical lol... it's what T&B are best at... going all over the map, grabbing whatever they want, and putting it together in shambolic perfection. It really pleases me to be able to offer this to you guys so enjoy. I know I've said this before but if someone had told me at 15 that my favourite bands/groups/labels wanted to give me DJ mixes (that at that time I was paying $20 dollars for on cassette at a rave) I would have said that sounded like a perfect world and exciting future. I don't know if I can say the former, but I certainly believe the latter... thanks Trouble & Bass! Please visit troubleandbass.blogspot.com, and Myspace! Be back soon...
