CONTEST: Win Bad Lieutenant Deluxe Prize Package!

Oh I'm reallllllllly enjoying this Bad Lieutenant album.

So these upcoming concerts are like a special delivery from God itself!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: */FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE/*

*VISA DELAY CAUSES BAD LIEUTENANT TO CANCEL U.S. CONCERT APPEARANCES*

It is with frustration and regret that *Bad Lieutenant* reluctantly announces the cancellation of the band's four U.S. dates set to commence next week. The more stringent immigration laws and changing visa parameters resulted in an inability to process the necessary paperwork.

"We were all so very excited about coming to the States to play our new music for our American fans," said Bad Lieutenant's Bernard Sumner, "and are extremely disappointed that on this occasion, we won't have the opportunity to do so. We plan to reschedule the Chicago and New York shows along with some additional U.S. dates in Spring 2010."

The four Bad Lieutenant dates that have been cancelled are:
November 18 - Park West (headline), Chicago, IL
November 19 - supporting the Pixies in Chicago, IL
November 21 - Webster Hall (headline), New York, NY
November 23 - supporting the Pixies in New York, NY

The concerts were in support of /Never Cry Another Tear/, Bad Lieutenant's debut release which arrived in stories on Tuesday, November 10. The band features New Order/Joy Division's Sumner, newcomer Jake Evans on vocals and guitars as well as guitarist Phil Cunningham and drummer Stephen Morris, musicians who helped make the legendary New Order a multi-Platinum-selling band and one of the most influential forces over the past three decades in the alt/rock/dance genres.
Bad Lieutenant's Spring 2010 dates will be announced soon."

Hmmm? What's that? You wanna go? And see what The Music Slut brilliantly described as New Order - Peter Hook + Blur’s Alex James?

Well you can do that! If you get chosen that is :) I've got tickets for shows at both Park West in Chicago and Webster Hall in New York! Two great shows in two of the greatest cities in the world... Put your names in the comment section (if you live in the Chicago/New York area, or can make it on your own dime to Chicago/New York) and one reader will be chosen to win a pair of tix (obviously separate winners for each night) to see one the coolest bands this year with members of a couple of the greatest bands EVER!

While you're waiting to see if you've made it enjoy these lil goodies:

Bad Lieutenant - "Sink Or Swim" YSI

THE NEW CONTEST WILL BE the Deluxe Bad Lieutenant package. What is that? How about you dream of the coolest thing that isn't free tickets to a show and there you have it! No, seriously though, so far what they've come up with is baller so don't be too sad about the change of plans/prizes :)

Check back as the contest will end, oh, let's say... November 15th? ALSO BE AWARE THAT THIS NOW OPENS THE CONTEST UP TO EVERYONE WHO LOVES BAD LIEUTENANT! Be back soon :)

New Dot Allison & Peter Doherty, plus Britpop!

I gotta admit I've been pretty bored with dance music as of late. I'm not saying that quality tracks haven't been coming out... it's just I'd rather listen to Blur, Oasis, Joy Division, Morrissey, The Cure, Late Of The Pier, and Klaxons (speaking of, when is that Klaxons album gonna come out now?!?! If you have "The Parhelion", "Moonhead", "Marble Fields And The Hydrolight Head Of Delusion", "Imaginary Pleasures", "Silver Forest", "Echos", "Venus", or "Hoodoo Borer" let me know!)

I mean, I dunno, maybe I'm full of it but British music (on a whole) is sort of in hibernation right now. We're looking back to Britpop, and finding some new scattered gems along the way, but music as a whole feels sort of stuck. So maybe it's time to review some of the glories of the somewhat recent past... and a couple of gems from the future :)

My friend, and inspiration, Dot Allison is about to put out a brilliant record called "Room 7 !/2 and a more polished version of this gem will be on it... these two really should do a whole album together!

Dot Allison & Peter Doherty- "I Wanna Break Your Heart (Demo)"

For more Dot Allison check here!

I heard over my Honeymoon that Oasis were quits, and last I heard Blur aren't writing any new music which basically amounts to the same things. So who is going to take their place. Arctic Monkeys are you gonna do it? Or are The Libertines coming back?

Blur- "Out Of Time (Live)" YSI

Oasis- "Let's All Make Believe (B-Side)" YSI

I hope you all enjoy. As the sun sets on Summer all these melancholy songs seem appropriate headed into fall... I can think of one good album to look out for: Bad Lieutenant I just started listening to today, Muse also look promising (but we'll see, and there is an upcoming Massive Attack EP that (trust me) is VERY exciting. I'll be back soon!

Parlophone now UK's Most Viewed Youtube Channel!

Parlophone was the first record company that started giving me promos back in the day... and at least a couple times they were nice enough to give me the "jump" on everyone else which helped establish this blog a little quicker. I didn't start posting their stuff to climb the ladder though... I posted it because a large portion of my favourite bands are on it! See for yourself below and remember some of the high points in Parlophone's esteemed career :) Check out more here.

Peter Doherty- "Broken Love Song"

The Verve- "Bittersweet Symphony"

Blur- "The Universal"

Radiohead- "No Surprises"

Pet Shop Boys- "West End Girls"

Hot Chip- "Ready For The Floor"

Late Of The Pier- "The Bears Are Coming"

Supergrass- "Alight"

Big thanks to David Lennon. Be back soon!

Weekend Wrap Up: The Verve, Bloc Party, David Bowie, The Smiths

This is sort of a personal blog because I don't have much new to post or if I do I'm waiting to post it... so for you haters who think I'm too self involved, skip this one, you know and come back for just the music some other time :)

Well, it's the day of rest today... which means of course I'm getting upsetting calls from my family lol... but outside of that it's nice. The wife doing homework and getting ready for ballet... me watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force (which I just got the wife for her birthday), Boondocks, and now some music video DVDs I picked up.

At the moment I'm watching the Verve collected videos (including both UK and US versions) which is a great trip down memory lane.

I remember this time when I was at Interlochen Arts Academy living in the Hemmingway dorms, and feeling that music/culture was really turning the corner and a lot of that rested on the shoulder of Oasis, The Prodigy, and The Verve. One day after class I saw and ad for the premier of the "Lucky Man" video! A big deal as "Bittersweet Symphony" had recieved a lot of support from mainstream television and radio... along with this we also had plugs for both The Verve and Prodigy live at the "10 Spot".

It turned out that this change in culture, one which would hopefully help elevate America to that of it's English brothers... in terms of indie/dance music getting support from the general (enlightened) public... never happened (as much as I was counting on it happening). I really thought when we were getting this strange influx of British awesomeness we were going to allow space for it in our culture lol...

The "death" of Britpop was ushered in shortly thereafter, "The Great Electronica Hype Of 1996-1998" died on it's knees when albums like "Vegas" by The Crystal Method and "Decksdrumsandrockandroll" by Propellerheads didn't really take off (albums poised to hit the "rock" lovers) and The Prodigy (mostly) died out with them (in America that is).

There were a few surprise appearances (Oasis Unplugged) and reruns of these other live performances (as well as videos by Massive Attack, Manic Street Preachers, Blur, etc relegated to late night/early morning programming) but mostly from that point on... and it pains me to write these words... it was Kid Rock (who isn't a bad bloke but his music sucks), Britney Spears, countless boy bands, and the decline of American civilization that has lead us to where we are today.

Personally? As a 15 year old kid I thought the world was going to look like the Blur video for "The Universal"...

...everyone would be interested in culture like what was shown in the pages of The Face, and music would head towards America embracing electronic music for more than commercials.

Frankly it was quite the opposite. A few bands and DJs have done very well from England coming to the US but mostly not...

And then that amazing peaceful rave culture that came from us, only to be beefed up by Nicky Halloway, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling et al, and then handed back to us stronger than ever... fell apart once some dumb kid took something (that probably wasn't actually ecstasy) and blew the whole thing onto the front pages of USA Today (it sort of ended up like the end of 24 Hour Party People). I still have all the papers and the magazines. Shit effected me greatly. No I'm serious. I thought the world was going to stay like this...

I hope one day to see a less xenophobic America that is willing to not dismiss British music as "gay", and not dismiss dance music as "gay" or "video game/commercial music" (Sample Conversation: "Oh, that's who this is? Midwest Product you say? It's the music for the Hummer commercial yeah? You said they were on that PacMan label you like so much... ghost something? I knew it has something to do with videogames. So that ghost place makes video game music? Why would you listen to that shit") and a country that is willing to let people convene in warehouses, sweat out the cares of the week, and not have the DEA come crashing in.
Here's that Midwest Product commercial... gotta make money somehow... but this is one of the best songs ever written...

I hope for more information about drugs and their effects as opposed to the standard "Drugs will kill you" line that makes young kids think heroin is as safe as weed because, well, weed didn't kill them (you think I'm kidding but I'm not). I hope for a lot of things, things I'll probably never see... but I'll do what I can to work toward them...

ANYWAY I DIGRESS... The Verve videos just brought back a happier time in life where I was dating a gorgeous girl, who inexplicably wanted me because I was fat with Sammy Hagar hair, setting the bar for every relationship I would have after that (no big surprise I married her 10 years later lol). And era before terror, an era where kids who listened to NIN were able to get down to a DJ set that had both Iggy Pop and Daft Punk in it. An era where the world seemed like it listened to the Verve and Pulp during the day and then got their rocks off to Goldie and the Chemical Brothers at night. A world that looked like the photos of Rut Blees Luxemburg.

RIGHT RIGHT! Back to less personal stuff... The Verve DVD is good. So is their new album Forth... no songs that I see taking America by storm but I tell ya "Sit and Wonder", "Love Is Noise", and "Rather Be" are fucking amazing songs. Personally I dug the Richard Ashcroft solo albums but, you know, to each their own!

I also bought The Smiths video collection. I probably don't have to say anything about this because you know it's awesome lol... instead perhaps I should say how fond I am of the new Morrissey album! "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell", "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris", and "Something Is Squeezing My Skull" are great starter tracks... but the whole thing is as good as you expect it to be :) Here's a little documentary I found on YouTube...

Morrissey- "Munich Air Disaster 1958" off the English Blood Irish Heart EP available on iTunes.

I also chanced upon a used copy of David Bowie's Sound And Vision clear vinyl boxed set... for $50 USD... it's going for at least $250 on eBay so BIG UPS TO THE CORNER RECORD STORE ON WEST MAIN STREET! Y'all did me reallllll good. I also got Bloc Party "Silent Alarm Remixed" (an album Pitchfork claimed was better than the original, something rare for a remix album) cheap, and a strange artifact... a cassette single of 808 State & UB40 that I didn't know existed! What a weird pairing... I still haven't listened to it but I expect it will be... well... interesting at the least lol...

And here's a Bloc Party track just because I mentioned them...
Bloc Party- "Like Eating Glass (Blackstrobe Remix)"

And that's it! Ramble ramble ramble blah blah blah... Be back soon... hope you had a good weekend. Enjoy the Superbowl... I hope I win the office pool lol...

UPDATE: I won my money back which is what matters. Did you hear that in Arizona, right after the winning touchdown, some cable subscribers got to see some chick unzipping a dudes fly, and then THAT DUDE waving his wang all over the place? Bizarre! But it wasn't out of place with sweating dudes piling on top of each other and smacking each others asses lol. PLUS there was a woman involved which officially makes male full frontal nudity "not gay" lol...

BY MASSIVE REQUEST (Repost): Blur- "Wassailing Song"

Wowzers. I mean, I know I hunt down Christmas songs this time of year for my 'Very Indie Christmas' mixtapes... but this song is OUT OF CONTROL! The demand for this thing is wild, and strangely enough, it doesn't seem to have really made the rounds in the blogosphere.

Here's info on the release itself...
BLUR The Wassailing Song (Ultra rare 1992 UK Food/Parlophone Records one-sided 7" vinyl single which was available only at a Salvation Army venue gig and limited to just 500 copies! - Credited on the label as 'Presented And Arranged By Gold Frankincense And Blur', this is without doubt one of the biggest indie rarities ever...

More info from http://www.damon-albarn.com...
"Wassailing Song" is a limited edition single that was given away at a special Christmas gig. Food Records had advised them against doing the gig, but Blur did it anyway. The song is an old Christmas hymn, and the title refers to a wassailing bowl, which was used to drink punch. Only 500 copies of the record were made. The record is unique in the Blur discography for being the only one that features vocals from all four members of the band. Damon sings the first verse, Graham the second, Dave the third and Alex the last verse. All four sing the chorus."

Interesting to say the least... well after repetitious demand I give you "Wassailing Song"... record companies? Please don't c&d me. You can't get this record anywhere...

Blur- "Wassailing Song"
Apparently this song crapped out right after I posted it... or like 100 people downloaded it that fast lol... so I'll repost as fast as I can :)
Blur- "Wassailing Song" REUP

While I'm at it apparently the Sun had this to say...

"Alternative rock band ‘Blur’ is reportedly set to reunite and perform at Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts.

Rockers Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, who have been missing from the music scene as a band since their 2003 tour, are expected to soon confirm their reunion.

The British pop group, which had suffered a row between Damon and Graham that resulted in the axe man’s departure in 2002, is said to be coming back together at 2009’s Glastonbury before doing their own show in London’s Hyde Park in July.

“It was the reunion many thought would never happen. Graham and Damon’s relationship had become toxic by 2002. But they’ve patched up their differences and are friends again,” British tabloid The Sun quoted a source as saying.

“The group have done some rehearsals and are all chuffed with the results. They’ve decided is the time to go back out on the road,” the source added. (ANI)"

I'll believe that when I see it lol...

Merry Christmas and happy holidays you Arcadia readers :)

MORE TGTB&TQ!!!

Here at Arcadia, we LOVE Parlophone records. Solid release after solid release after solid release. Between them, and their offshoot Regal, we've been able to bring you stuff from Babyshambles, Tiny Dancers, and The Good The Bad & The Queen far before their release date. It's good for you guys because you get in on the new stuff early, it's good for me because it keeps you guys coming back lol!

Given the fact that they are so nice to us I suggest you guys actually pick up these albums... the Babyshambles EP was so amazing I would be surprised if you guys HADN'T gotten it, Tiny Dancers have gotten a lot of hype since we posted em (Radar in NME, and a session with Steve Lamacq), and OBVIOUSLY this TGTB&TQ album is going to be bonkers awesome. So please, support the labels who are playing ball with us here and prove to the majors and bigger indies that file sharing, blogs, and the like are PART of the future of music and not just a hindrance that should be done away with!

So if you've been paying attention, I'm sure you picked up the last track we posted from Damon Albarn (member of Blur and Gorillaz) and Paul Siminon's (formerly of The Clash) new project The Good The Bad & The Queen called "History Song". It was the amazing first track off their forthcoming album that hints at the same magic that we've seen in other Albarn efforts of the recent past. NOW WE'VE GOT THE 2nd SONG! And it's just as cool as the last one! Make sure you leave comments because I really want to know what you guys think of it.

Here's an AWESOME little video that can give you a better overview of the project and the music... just in case you didn't see the bio excerpt I posted last time...

And without further ado...

Here's a live video for "80's Life"...

As I mentioned last time, you can preorder the album from 7 Digital, and if you do before 15 January, you can listen to 5 tracks off the album before it is released on 22 January! You can also pick it up at Amazon US or Amazon UK. Make sure you also pop by their website and their Myspace. Please pick up the album and show your support! This song will be up for a week and then I gotta take it down so get it while the gettings good!

ON A QUICK POLITICAL NOTE: Since I mentioned something earlier about people wanting to do away with things on the internet... I don't know if you are aware but the Internet is AT RISK of being taken over by the super huge companies out there and turned into a mindless commercial wasteland. Can you imagine in Internet where AT&T had control over all the content on it? I assure you there would be no more pictures of young ladies birthing plastic dolls out of their hoo-hoos' (and other pervy things like that) but you undoubtedly would end up with lots of political things getting censored as well. It is not worth it to give up our privacy and our control for better internet browsers on our phones and cheaper cable modems. Please sign a petition, send a letter to your representatives, and keep an eye on this or we may end up with merely a 'ghost' of what the internet once was. PROTECT NET NEUTRALITY!!!

Here's what Moby has to say about it... whatever your feelings are about him it's a very informative video! When you're done with that head over to Save The Internet to make a difference!

THE GOOD THE BAD & THE QUEEN

I'm trying to get on top of this and be the first person to post this... I rarely feel that I've got any sort of inside track so I need to exploit this as fast as I possibly can! Given that, this will be a very short post because I want to get it up and stake my claim as one of the first people to post an album track from THE GOOD THE BAD & THE QUEEN!

Just in case you don't have the back story (or didn't see it the last time I posted that live track) here it is from Wikipedia:

Initially reported as a solo album by Albarn with Danger Mouse producing, NME revealed in late July 2006 that the solo project was switched to a new group formed by Albarn. The group, which consists of Albarn, The Clash's bassist Paul Simonon, former The Verve guitarist Simon Tong (who also played guitar during Blur's Think Tank tour following Graham Coxon's departure, and played guitar for Gorillaz on their "Demon Days" album) and Afrobeat pioneer and Africa 70 drummer Tony Allen, released and deleted their first single, "Herculean" on 30 October 2006 (see 2006 in British music). The single followed the band's appearance at the BBC's Electric Proms season at the redeveloped The Roundhouse in Camden on 26 October. Three warm-up gigs in East Prawle at the Pig's Nose Inn, Ilfracombes Marlboro Club and The Exeter Cavern Club preceded the Electric Proms gig. The second major gig of the band's career took place on 12th December 2006, at Wilton's Music Hall in East London. It was witnessed by 300 specially selected fans, as the launch gig of MySpace's The List. The band will release a second single, "Kingdom of Doom", a week prior to the release of their debut album, The Good, the Bad and the Queen in January 2007. The album was produced by Danger Mouse, and features songs about London.

The Good The Bad And The Queen- "History Song" YSI
The Good The Bad And The Queen- "History Song"

How fucking stoked are you to hear this track? I know I've been waiting a long time... I'm a pretty big Blur/Gorillaz/Mali Music/Anything-Damon-Does fan so... I can't wait to hear the album.. tell me what you guys think!

I wanted to mention that you can preorder the album from 7 Digital, and if you do before 15 January, you can listen to 5 tracks off the album before it is released on 22 January! Which is pretty fucking sweet if you are dying to hear it. You can also pick it up at Amazon US or Amazon UK. To stay on top of TGTB&TQ news make sure you pop by their website and their Myspace.

Here's an extra parting gift...

Oh yeah... and if you wondered when the next single is out (because Wikipedia wasn't very clear) it will be officially released on 15 Jan, with the debut self titled album coming out a week later.

AND I ALSO WANTED TO MENTION I'LL BE POSTING ANOTHER TRACK FROM THE ALBUM IN JANUARY SO MAKE SURE YOU CHECK BACK! HOLLA!

BRITPOP EXPLOSION! Oasis vs Blur LIVE!

I have always been an ardent Oasis follower. The first time I heard "MAY-BAYYYYYY... I DON'T REALLY WANNA KNOWWWWW... HOW YOUR GAH-DEN GROWSSSS" I was hooked. "Live Forever" is the first song I ever learned how to play on the guitar (in fact it's one of the only songs I 'actually' know how to play as I'm not a guitar player... *in the most pretentious I went to art school way* I'm a SONGWRITER lol). I cannot count how many of the best moments of my life were surrounded or soundtracked by Oasis songs. So many fantastic moments.

Like, how about when my friends Melissa and Lizzy and I went to see them with Travis (the band not a person) in Detroit? We were only like 17 or 18 (which meant Meli Mel was a couple years younger than that) and we got soooooooooo fucking drunk. This college age guy in front of us was drinking Jim Beam and buying us beers, and he would keep turning around and beign like "WOOOOO You're my bro man! Oasis are fucking SWEET man!" and letting us take swigs of his pint. If memory serves me correctly I had a joint on me that we smoked with him (who's joint it was evades me but oh well) and it made Lizzy really sick cause she was already so drunk. Frat boy brings me my third and last beer (which I guzzle thinking 'they're bound to play plenty more songs so I better blow this down so when they finish an hour from now I'll be straight to drive') and as soon as I take my last sip Liam goes 'fuck you good night' and the show was over.

Needless to say I almost killed us going home. I frankly it was one of maybe three times I have driven drunk (WHICH I DO NOT CONDONE AND THINK IS HORRIBLE SO DON'T DO IT!) and it was sooooo difficult. When we got home it was as though I had climbed Mount Everest and I was so proud we got home in one piece (btw thanks for that God!). They ended up staying at my house because it didn't really seem to make sense and... if my memory serves me correctly... my girlfriend walked in on the three of us in bed the next morning and was ready to kill me (if she didn't come in she at least stopped by). Now, nothing happened, I didn't do anything with either one of them, they were just my friends, but we all just sat around in bed giggling and being retarded because I think we were still high... and it was one of those bonding moments that makes you friends for life.

We got to see one of the greatest bands of all time. We got royally fucked up. We were saved from certain death (did I mention it was raining buckets, I had the car on cruise control because I didn't know better and almost ran into a bunch of cement dividers because the 'move-over-arrow-highway-sign' was turned off?). We got free Ian Brown solo album singles outside the show. We got to see Noel sing acoustic 'Masterplan'. We had a major laugh and got to do everything fun (and stupid) that teenagers do in one night.

Of course, I've seen Oasis many times since (most of which have been plagued by rain and near death experiences) and I will tell you each time I go it strengthens my feeling that the world is an ok place. That other people see the magic I do in Oasis... in fact it goes a little something like "I think you're the same as me/ We'll see things they never see..."

Their new collection Stop The Clocks (UPDATE: you can stream the whole entire thing over here at AOL= Oasis, 'Stop the Clocks'), which is a greatest hits album with new tracks AND a concept video has just come out and I thought I would celebrate by posting some live stuff to stir up some nostalgia. Here's some tracks from The Point in Dublin, Ireland... it's all Noel, no Liam, in all of his coked out Be Here Now glory! If nothing else make sure you check out 'Stand By Me' which is labeled 'Sand By Me'... ooops!

Oasis- "Be Here Now (Live @ The Point, Dublin, Ireland)"

Oasis- "Stand By Me (Live @ The Point, Dublin, Ireland)"

Oasis- "D'You Know What I Mean" (Live @ The Point, Dublin, Ireland)"

This right here is the best performance I have ever seen them do:

And I really love this song... both are off Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants which I think is the album everyone dislikes except for me...

And since I mentioned Travis... I thought I'd give you this to jog your memory...

Travis- "Driftwood (Live @ Link Cafe, Glasgow)"

Now............... as much as I am a major major Oasis fans with posters in my living room, posters in my bedroom, Oasis ring tones, stickers on my car, and ringtones on my phone... I do like Blur a lot as well. I suppose in the Blur vs Oasis war, I'm more on the Oasis side though. HOWEVER, I own every single Blur album and 13 had a profound impact on my life. And Think Tank. And Parklife. Memories of driving to Bath from London listening to Badhead falling asleep in the sun. In fact when I was younger I used to think I wanted to be Damon Albarn when I grew up (even though everyone said he was a twat). In fact I used to carry a picture of him in my binder during high school (him and David Bowie along with a chat transcript of a 5am GMT chat with the Thin White Duke himself). I own ever Gorillaz album, I have a huge poster in my living room, a dvd and loads Albarn related stuff on my Amazon Wishlist (hint). So having said all this... I will post some Blur as well. Just to appeal to you all.

Blur- "Beetlebum (Live @ Brixton Academy)"

Blur- "Girls & Boys (Live @ Brixton Academy)"

Blur- "Song 2 (Live @ Brixton Academy)"

Sorry I haven't been around for a few days. I'll make sure to post TONS over the weekend... in fact I'm going to start right this second!
