I don't need to say anything about Emalkay... if you listen to dubstep you love this shit already... and if you don't listen to it I doubt you'll be able to resist this track! It features ISoA favourites She Is Danger's Lena Cullen on vocals. Here's a little info on her...

"Already hailed as "the Kate Bush of Dubstep" - Lena Cullen is a British multi-instrumentalist / producer / vocalist from London drawing on dubstep, dub, trip-hop, techno, electronica and dark wave in her work.

Known to many as one half of female dub electronica duo She is Danger, alongside rising supernova producer / DJ Maya Jane Coles; Lena has already made fans out of the likes of Adam F, Damon Albarn and Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja.

As She is Danger; Lena has remixed artists such as Gorillaz, Groove Armada, Ellie Goulding, Delphic and, in particular, an acclaimed dubby reworking of Massive Attack's 'Girl, I Love You' which was included on the deluxe album version of the band's 'Heliogland!'

Lena has forthcoming single collaborations landing in 2011 with Dub Police's seminal Emalkay named 'The World' and Engine-Earz Experiment's 'Reach You' - the latter collab has already enjoyed wide ranging radio and club support prior to it's Spring 2011 release date with the track already gaining almost half a million views on Youtube alone!

After a recent highly successfully solo UK tour supporting Dreadzone; Lena's debut album 'Something Subconcious' [Working Title] will be largely co-produced by herself and Andru Lorenzo and is scheduled to arrive in late 2011."

"With initial support in the form of grime veteran Plastician, “Birmingham’s finest” Emalkay gained the attention of South London based label Boka Records with the warped, future bass drones and epic strings of Gut Feeling. Continuing the success, Testing The Waters EP was released in October 2006 followed by Monsters in June 2007.

The revolutionary sound of Mecha, released in the fall of 2007, gained Emalkay support from the likes of Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty, as well as many of the leading figures of the current dubstep scene. It seemed Emalkay’s own potential as a pivotal dubstep artist was finally being realised. His final release on Boka Records was the reggae influenced My Story in April 2008.

NEW Little Boots Remixes!

Apparently Little Boots' full-length debut album "HANDS" is coming out in the U.S./Canada March 2nd via Elektra Records. There are "new" remixes from Wideboys, Rusko, Tiesto, GRVRBBRS,
Clap Mike Amour, and Alexander Robotnik to drum up hype for the release... but does this mean that Robotnik and Rusko did NEW remixes? OR they just haven't officially been released in North America? Either way, I haven't heard some of them so they've got my attention. I loved that album and if the remixes come with it? I'm more than sold :)

Scion Electro House Competition: Win a copy of Pro Tools!

Remix competitions are EVERYWHERE. I still have a grip of WAV files I can't find the time to mess with... Klaxons, Horrors, Editors, Radiohead, Hard Fi, Steve Angelo, Franz Ferdinand, and then a bunch more that are probably not for competitions, that I haven't been able to follow up on lol!

They're a dime a dozen. So what's the problem? I mean WAV files are wicked right? You're getting the same advantage with those that professional remixers/artists do! So that's awesome right?

Well, it's awesome if you have loads, and loads, of time. Case and point: I started remixing the new Frankmusik single "Better Off As Two" two weekends ago and I can't get anywhere with it. Why? Well there initially was one vocal (the left channel) which I had to split into about 10 parts in order to lay down a foundation (funny the difference between 120 and 120.5 BPM; what a headache)... then a week later I was able to secure the right channel (which really hadn't been available) and had to go back and do the same. THAT MEANS I SPENT TWO SATURDAYS splitting the vocal up to match the tempo in Reason and JUST laying down the basics. F-R-U-S-T-R-A-T-I-N-G.

Now, ultimately, that's cool because one day you guys will hear a wicked remixes of his last two singles from me... but in a time sensitive competition? It can be a little more than difficult finding time and using your own software/hardware. Unless I go pro, I'll never win one of these things because I don't have the time. I work 55 hours a week and am married... how am I gonna get a remix done perfectly in two weeks? Using my own set up is too complicated to do anything quickly.

The other alternative is "web based" mixers. Most web-based mixers for remix competitions are garbage. Another good example: Without getting too specific; a "new rave" band had a special remix competition and the program would BARELY stay open on a Mac and only contained about 6 channels (bass, vox, backup vox, guitar, guitar 2, effects)... it was said the winners would be on their single. Um, if the people who remixed the single (for a name think She-Ra/Atari game+Canada=Black Hoodies) were actually winners? They exported those sounds to a keyboard and recorded it through hardware not a little software mixing console. That thing had NO flexibility.

So the joy of the modern accessible electronic music era! WAV files for all! Little chance of winning! Crap software! What's the solution?

Well, I think I saw the future while watching a little demo for Scion's Electro House Blender. It's a web-based, flash mixer... and I know I was just complaining about this, but hold on... it's got 800 sounds! Not 6 sounds... 800! Now, I know that sometimes you want all the parts to yourself to run through you fave soft-synths but, to level the playing field for the rest of us this type of web sequencer type app is perfect for a competition. In this specific case, it wouldn't make sense to give you a zip file of 800 sounds, but in the future this type of program (and maybe offering sounds files) may be a good 1/2 way point between the pros and people who don't have multiple weeks to remix something.

Scion has REALLY put themselves at the forefront of electronic music. Traditionally I have opposed "corporate sponsorship" in music but I realized (as I'm pretty far away from my angst ridden teen years) that companies are going to be the new distributors and that's actually a good thing. Being signed to a label (especially the smaller ones, which electronic labels tend to be) is more like being in a gang now, where the name of the gang gives you access to worlds you wouldn't see otherwise... but going forward it's going to be companies and corporations putting our fav music out because we, the people, have shown them 9/10 we're just gonna take it anyway. The labels are just going to be there to represent quality. And more than ever the consumer is going to be responsible for what's being released and what is successful!

Scion A/V has really trail blazed here and is one of the front runners in changing the music industry. Their compilations have been quality, the design is amazing, and they are repeatedly making music history.

I think it's really rad that they've offered up a website to mix this song on, then they've got a widget to track the most popular mixes, and last but not least... users can create their own mixes for a chance to win the new ProTools software! So if you win you can learn to be a full on remix virtuoso with ProTools (which is, for those of you who don't know, the industry standard of professional producers). Man, I don't even have a copy of ProTools... whoever wins this is gonna be a lucky mug lol!

I've got these in .wav right now and you better bet they're gonna be my indie dance crossover slam dunk when I'm DJing! Iggy Pop's voice is not one you forget, or ignore...

Speaking of... I watched Trainspotting the other day and of course there's all that talk about Iggy Pop (and "Lust For Life" of course)... and it triggered memories of seeing him with Pearl Jam a few years back. I kid you not, a 20 year old would have been hard pressed to have the energy he did... the show was an explosive electric slice of perfection that I was honoured to have seen. The man is a fucking legend through and through, so to hear him on a track like this with one of dance music's kings is a very welcomed treat... and now you get to hear it in about 10 different ways lol!

Oh yes and see it as well... you'll remember the last video was just a remixed version, not the official, with Iggy on the screen...

Also got this news with the songs... Ron Ashton was part of one of the most important bands in all of music history so his passing is a significant loss...
On a related but more somber note, R.I.P. Ron Ashton of The Stooges. Ron suffered a heart attack and passed away at the age of 60; he will be missed.

On a personal note...
To both the haters and my friends it's worth mentioning that my grandma who many of you know (as you were probably passed out sleeping in her basement before, having thrown down crazy style Djing the night before or something you'd never expect in a 'grandparent's' house lol) is in the hospital and is struggling with heart failure. Regardless of what side of the fence you're on if you want to reach her she's at Bronson...

But all I could say was "Hey"... BLOC PARTY'S 'INTIMACY' OUT!

I've only been listening to this new album since I woke up... but I already really like it. AND I THINK YOU SHOULD BUY IT, NOT TRY IT ON FOR SIZE AND WAIT A FEW MONTHS AND FORGET TO BUY IT!

I initially wasn't sold on Bloc Party. I didn't like Silent Alarm... at first. I thought they were impostors or something. Boy was I wrong. On top of being wrong I not only loved the first album but became a strong supporter of the oft maligned A Weekend In the City. I also got to meet the band in between album one and two, and have to say Kele is one of the nicest front men I've ever met. So with all that said... please don't C&D me Bloc-Party's-label :)

Here's a little video to remind you why you fell in love with this band to begin with... I love that it's 'Helicopter' is about George Bush. It makes me feel good that someone can write a political song that doesn't make me want to sleep...

Remember good old Heads We Dance? They were a fantastic indie pop group that led us to a young artist called Frankmusik and provided us with fantastic songs like "Love In The Digital Age" and "My Heart Is Set On You"!

I really love the internet. As though it were a person. Seriously. Because I get hooked up with stuff like these Make Model remixes and I just wanna spazz out. It's all too good to be true! I was actually just downloading some autoKratz on good old eMusic and I realized "OH SHIT! I still have those remixes I haven't posted!"... it's been a rough day today... my grandma is in the hospital, my really cool new boss who was into Amy Winehouse got canned, and I'm just lonely are irritated... and these remixes saved my day...

There are some days where things are so super fucking awesome that you can't believe it, and days where things suck so fucking badly that you want to put your head in a trash can. I expect this day to be both. Don't worry I'm only going to give you guys the good side lol...

So, I every once and a while I get an email that makes my head spin. South Central, Frank Musik, To My Boy's emails and shit have all made me totally lose my cool and show my true fan-boy-dom in the past... today's example might just take the cake.

I'm really really big into Jahcoozi... as in, when my DJ partner and I are working on songs we say things like "No, a little more like Jahcoozi" (even though we're working on a dubstep song lol). But seriously, I fucking love them. Their most recent album "Blitz'n'Ass" has been a constant fixture in my car stereo and my work computer, I'm always running around trying get everyone on the bandwagon, and I can't express enough to the world how much I love this band. ONE HITCH THOUGH... I always subconsciously think of them as being a German band. And literally am dumb enough to not put the pieces together and note that Sri-Lancan born MC Sasha Perera is FROM LONDON. Durrrr durrr durrr. I'm sitting here like "Did I ever actually listen to the lyrics of 'BLN' or was I just trying to mix it into another song?" (I think the problem is that most of the music listening I do is at work where I have the volume turned down low so as not to offend the person next to me lol)... Total disappointment in myself because I could have posted them a long time ago!

HERE'S WHERE THE GOOD NEWS COMES IN! Robot Koch from Jahcoozi just hit me up with some songs. And given the fact that they have an "international" lineup I can now slide them in under the "Bands-that-aren't-exactly-British but-we-pretend-like-they-are" tag. TO MAKE IT EVEN BETTER this means you get an AMANDA BLANK REMIX and a remix from RUSTIE that I swear is fucking fire (and he's from Glasgow so it wraps everything up and puts a nice little bow on top of the post)... both remixes will have y'all motherfuckers hungry for more I PROMISE! But first... just in case you don't pay attention to current music trends here is some bio info on Jahcoozi...

"Jahcoozi is a Berlin-based multinational trio comprised of Sri-Lancan/British MC Sasha Perera, Robot Koch and Israeli born Oren Gerlitz. The group's sound has been described as consisting of abstract electronic beats within ragga, hip-hop, blip-hop, re and electronica.

In 2003 Jahcoozi starting playing on the Berlin underground circuit and made a name for themselves with their live performances. The trio's debut ‘Fish’ EP which came out on the Berlin club label WMF Records in July 2003. After John Peel played Fish on his BBC radio show and the De-Bug listed the EP as one of its favourites, Jahcoozi were invited to play at Marke B, a Berlin music festival. The band has also opened for Big Dada Soundsystem, Aphex Twin, DAT Politics, Chicks on Speed, Airborn Audio, Kevin Blechdom, Jamie Lidell, Tiefschwarz and Mocky."

Berlin based producer Robot Koch is the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed Jahcoozi and post rock/hiphop outfit The Tape vs RQM.
If he`s not on tour with Jahcoozi or Djing somewhere in the world he still finds time to produce and remix other people and write music for film scores.

He made beats and remixes for artists like Infinite Livez (Ninja Tune/Big Dada) Justine Electra (City Slang), Raz Ohara (Kitty Yo), Data Mc (Hamton), Al Haca (Klein) and Christopher Wiltis (Ghostly International), Rustie (Stuff Records) and Amanda Blank (downtown rec).

He`s also know for wicked DJ sets and mashups and for not getting a lot of sleep.

Boy what a week. Exhausting to say the least. HOWEVER, I've got the light at the end of the tunnel however on my hard drive... I've got the hottest fucking remixes on earth and all of them straight from the source (which means that high bitrate you DJs are seeking)!


I just checked my email to find that Arcadia favs To My Boy had just sent over their "previously un-blogged" Sinden remix of their track "Model". This song, without question, has peak time dancefloor tune written all over it. A few years from now you'll hear this tune on a mix cd that you forgot you had and think "Man, 2007 was full of fucking bangers! That To My Boy track reminds me of how awesome life was before robots took over the world"... no, but seriously, this is the sound of the summer hands down...

South Central are like Sam and my template for State Crime... one day we'll gather up some money and get them to do remixes for us.. keep you eyes are ears peeled for that one lol...


The first track is a remix for newbies Twisted Charm that hasn't been posted anywhere else yet. I was reading 'Dazed and Confused' and came upon a little article about them so my interest was already piqued... and then BOOM, S.C. shoot their wicked grimey remix of their track into my inbox and not only was my curiosity satiated but I was also blown away. I have yet to hear the original but if it's half as awesome as this remix I'll pass out.

And lastly is a South Central remix (and Arcadia exlusive) for a band I've kind of slept on. I saw a bit about Radar in errrr Radar (in NME) I think a couple months back but didn't take the time to look them up because I'm usually wading in a sea of music that goes up to my eyeballs. The nugget floated to the top of that sea and South Central bring the pain and rock the dance floor to pieces.

ANYWAY... I said I was going to do a Phones piece. There is a great article about him in XLR8R this month, with a lot of it focusing on his Epic Man records. I haven't really herd much of that but you can grab those records over at Kitsune.

Here is the lowdown on Phones/Epworth from Wikipedia:

"Paul Epworth is a British indie music producer. He's worked with and/or remixed many successful British indie bands, including Bloc Party, The Futureheads, Babyshambles, Goldfrapp and The Streets. He is also a well known remixer, working under the name Phones. His debut single under the Phones moniker, "Sharpen The Knives" is due out on French label Kitsuné in November 2006. He was also in the band Lomax.

In 2006 Paul Epworth began started making music under the name Epic Man. His debut single, More is Enough, features Plan B.

From his official site: 'I always wanted to make exciting music. The stuff that made the hairs on your neck stand on end. that magic factor that could be about a song, a sound, a voice, a rhythm, or just silence.........space......
